Caravan Maintenace Tips

It pays to check underneath.

Shock absorber bushes a bit tired so replacing them here in Moranbah on the coalfields west of Mackay. Luckily we carry a few spares and a reasonable toolkit. ….. old bushie habit. (A big dob of chewing gum got us out of Sturts Stony Desert many years ago)..

Since you last saw me under our caravan yesterday, we’ve managed to have all the shock absorber bushes replaced using a vice and a few sockets, and this morning I’ve remounted the final three on the van. We had a few new shockies as spares and we’ve mounted those on the left hand side as that side gets the hardest wear. Now we can pack up and head north from Moranbah, up Belyando Crossing way, towards Charters Towers and northwards towards Laura for my reunion with my past in the late 40s.

How our Hayes Electronic Stability Control saved our lives near Woodford (S.E. Qld) this afternoon. Summary: if you don’t have one fitted to your van, The Child Bride and I gently suggest that you have one fitted …… say, tomorrow.

The Child Bride and I were a little tired of our van awning going whoop whoop every time the wind came up so we’ve installed a pair of rafters to go with our anti-flap kits. If you’ve been a bit hesitant for whatever reason, to have a go at this installation, here’s the easy way to do it. Total cost 89 bucks plus a $5 tube of silicone, plus an hour of your time. Piece of cake. Many thanks to The Child Bride for skilfully wielding our iPhone. Bugger all retakes, no gimbal camera mount and no remote mikes. Bloody great job, darlin’.

I’m receiving quite a few inquiries on how to silence a caravan water pump so I thought we may help a few more with the mods we made to our pump. We have two pumps and two water systems. Try this trick to silence your old pump but if you have to get a new pump we recommend the Shurflo 4000 series as it is very quiet. Check the video and note that the new pump on the left is very quiet but the older one sounds like a Gatling gun. Most of the noise comes from the pump vibrating the hoses through the floor. So I installed those flexible hoses used to deliver water to toilet cisterns. You’ll notice the brass fitting in installed in the end of the water pipe to allow the fitment of the flexible pipe. Mount the pump on rubber or carpet. The blue water hose on the pump on the left was a workaround until I sourced another flexible hose. With the cupboard door shut the silenced pump is hardly noticeable. It looks a bit gangly with all those silver pipes around, but the mission was to silence the pump, not create an artistic masterpiece. The Child Bride used to be embarrassed to use the noisy pump late at night. Good luck with your installations.
