It’s only an hour west of Gympie but is well worth your while to stop and have a look around, not forgetting to have a yarn with the locals.
The Child Bride and I were lugging our camera gear down the main street (there are a few) when we heard “Hi there” from a parked car. Turned out to be a local artist Evelyn Morrison who fled the crowded suburbs of Sydney 5 years ago and now lives on an old gold mine just out of the town. Not much gold here now but there are still some keen fossickers hoping to strike it rich. Evelyn was a mine (forgive the unintended pun) of information. It really is caravan central for this area because the council has provided a fantastic free camp right in the heart of town ….. well, over the road from the pub, a café and a very interesting antiques store.
Speaking of the antiques store, check out the picture of The Child Bride’s excitement in finding a whole heap of bone handled table knives from yestercentury. (Those over 60 will know what we’re talking about. You may even remember the Klevasharp TV ads where James talks about “Grandma’s blunt butter knife”). We found a bundle of 6 of those 60 year old knives going for ….. wait for it…… $89. The owner sells heaps of them. We’ve bought a few from him in the past.
There’s another café with renowned hamburgers on the eastern end of town but the bowsers are no longer in use. Modern vehicle service centre and fuel just down the road as you enter town.
And have a guess what type of business used to be in the Chemist in days gone by. (Check the picture).
Heaps of caravans passing through. One pulled up beside us and a bloke got out, came over to us and what a surprise …. Bob and Vicki Leadbeater, mates of ours from long ago and other caravanning experiences.
Broadband is OK, tucker is good, rest area with tables and dunnies, lots of friendly people, history and a place to park your van for the night. What more could a travelling caravanner want? Oh, and did I mention that there’s a dump point, well signposted, at the eastern end of town. Now that makes your stay even better, doesn’t it.
We spent so much time here yarnin’ to the locals that we’ll have to spend another night. And as a side issue for you ABC News watchers, Kilkivan is newsreader Lisa Millar’s home town.
